When we found out that my wife was infertile, we were incredibly thankful that we had infertility insurance. She was able to go through the process of dealing with her infertility and eventually we were very joyful to see the positive symbol on a pregnancy test. It was great that our insurance was able to cover infertility treatments because it involves a lot of different procedures with several different doctors. Most of the time, infertility treatments are not instantly successful and the patient may need to undergo therapy for an extensive time before a pregnancy is possible.
For my spouse and myself, we turned out to be statistical outliers. Sadly, infertility treatment is far outside the scope of the common insurance plan, which will not include them. There is a couple that we know very well, the Crofters who have spend the last eight years trying to have a baby. And trust me, they’ve wanted babies. We were reluctant to tell them about our pregnancy because we knew that it would distress them. And we were correct, when Dolores found out, she left the room crying.
They’re tried some infertility treatments, but were only able to afford maybe a month’s worth of treatments. With such a short window of opportunity, the likelihood of their getting pregnant was almost zero. Although their first attempt was unsuccessful, they have begun a new plan to save what little money they can to put it toward another round of treatments. I feel so bad for them because although Walter has a steady job and they have insurance, but their plan does not cover infertility insurance.
I am not happy with the way things are in the insurance world, so I figured that if I examined the situation through the internet I might learn more about the availability of infertility insurance. This lovely couple is in such a sad situation because their fondest wish is for a baby. My emotions have been in a tumble because my family does not have maternity health insurance. The happiest news I ever got was last year when my wife told me that she was with child. However, at the time, she was just out of school and I was laboring as a freelance graphic artist. So we hadn’t been able to get any insurance although we were hoarding money toward that goal. Although this little bundle of joy was a surprise to both of us, we felt such huge surges of joy when we knew we were pregnant that words cannot describe our feelings.
And from the get go, we struggled with the understanding that we did not have insurance. And since we were already expecting a baby, we did not think we could get on an insurance plan as they frown on pre-existing conditions. But in all truth, we suffered from a total lack of information regarding insurance. My wife suggested that we look for private health plans online, but we were not sure where to find reputable websites or how to find plans that offered maternity health insurance.
The few that we could find had astonishingly high deductibles and appeared like a scam more than anything. This was a very trying situation, so we took our questions to my wife’s cousin, a doctor, who stated that it was possible to make an arrangement with a hospital. This meant a flat rate for labor and delivery, but if there were any complications, we would be forced to possibly pay thousands and thousands of dollars more.
It was a tough situation, and we did not have a lot of people to go to for advice. We did ask our questions of an old roommate of my wife’s, a woman who had tried and failed to find infertility insurance. After a lot of time and trials, we were able to locate a reputable website that provided great information that helped us differentiate between insurance plans.
And after all this time, we have a delightful son we named Walter. We take a lot of joy in our child, but regret that it took us such a long time to find the information that would have helped us. Insurance is a complicated issue, but there should be more ways to find out what your options are. As I snuggle my brand new child, it is impossible for me to feel that we are the final ones who will struggle with this same issue.

I’d never thought much about short-term disability insurance until that fateful day in February when my husband took a spill on some black ice while out getting the mail. He had an ankle injury that caused a great deal of discomfort for a long stretch of time. We were quite relieved to learn that his ankle was sprained and not broken like we thought. We breathed a huge sigh of relief that he wouldn’t have to deal with expensive medical procedures and be out of work for a while.
We were struck with the sober realization that as we didn’t have any short-term disability insurance, a real broken ankle could be a major issue. My husband does not have a traditional job, as he works as a freelance programmer, so he does not have employer-provided insurance. We decided it was time to locate a private insurance provider who could get us short-term disability insurance. What should have been simple, was, in fact quite difficult because there was no clear way to initiate the process.
My husband suggested we make a call to an insurance agent, which we decided was a good idea. This was a mistake since the agent never answered our questions and mostly spent the time trying to sell us insurance for a boat that we do not have. Of course, this was not what we wanted to hear and departed without signing anything. Why was it so tough to locate a plan that made sense and didn’t require a doctorate to grasp? We were not expecting a baby any time soon, but we had examined the possibility and did desire to have kids before we got too much further into our 30′s. Medicare Part B covers medically-necessary services and a few preventive services that are not covered by Medicare Part A. If you enroll in Part B, Medicare will pay 80% of the “reasonable charge” for covered services after you have met the deductible for that year. You are responsible for paying the other 20% (co-insurance).
Medicare has a defined “reasonable charge” for services that might be less than what the doctor charges. In that case, you’ll be responsible for paying 20% plus the difference between the actual cost of service and Medicare’s reimbursement. Some doctors may accept assignment, meaning they will only charge Medicare’s “reasonable charge” for services, leaving you to pay the 20% co- insurance.
You are responsible for paying the Part B premium every month. The standard premium is $96.40. You may have to pay a higher premium depending on your income if you file single on your tax return and your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is higher than $85,000. For married filing jointly, the MAGI limit is $170,000. Individuals and couples who exceed the minimum income limits could pay as much as $308.30 a month.
If you get Social Security or Retired Railroad Board (RRB) benefits, you’ll automatically receive Part B on the first day of the month you turn 65. Your Medicare card will come in the mail 3 months before your 65th birthday. If you are under 65, you will receive Part B after you’ve received disability benefits from Social Security or RRB for 2 years. Your Medicare card will come in the mail on the 25th month of your disability.
Though you are automatically enrolled in Part B under the previously mentioned circumstances, you don’t have to keep it. If you don’t want Part B, your card will come with instructions on cancelling it. Follow those instructions and send the card back. If you keep the card, you will pay Medicare part B premiums. Premiums are automatically deducted from your Social Security or RRB benefits.
If you would like to receive Part B, but you aren’t receiving Social Security or RRB benefits, you can sign up during the initial enrollment period which starts 3 months prior to you turning 65 and ends 3 months after you turn 65. You could also sign up for Part B during the general enrollment period from January 1 to March 31 each year and your coverage will begin on July 1 of that year. Also, if you missed the signup during your initial enrollment period, you could face a 10% increase in your monthly premium.
